Successful Bag Pack - Morrisons

A big thank you to everyone who supported this event on 6th March by turning up and packing bags. The Group raised £577 towards the hut fund and equipment.

The next bag pack is on 3rd April at Sainsburys Commercial Road. Can all members please make an effort to support this event as the more people and the more hours we put in to packing the more money we'll get and the quicker we'll get a nice new hut.

Anniversary Badge Competition

It’s come to our attention that we are 75 years old this year... Yes, a whole whacking 75 years of quality Scouting right here at St. Swithun’s. To celebrate this momentous milestone we’ll be holding a number of celebratory events starting in November 2010 which is when the records show the Group was founded. To kick things off we’ll be having a competition to design a badge to mark this fabulous occasion. There’ll be 5 categories for people to enter a) Beavers, b) Cubs, c) Scouts, d) Explorers & e) anyone else who fancies their chances. An overall winner will then be selected from these sectional winners. There will be suitable prizes for the winners.

The Badge will need to be about 4inches in diameter (or 4inches square) and have up to 4 colours. The badge will need to reflect a number of aspects

  1. The Scouting nature of the Group

  2. The 75 year anniversary

  3. The links to the Parish

  4. The links to Southsea/Portsmouth

Don’t worry if you think your drawing skills are not of the best. It’s the idea that’s important. We can get any idea worked by the company producing the badges.

Please put your entries on an A4 sheet of paper with you contact details on it.

The closing date for the competition is June 1st 2010.

The Great Smartie Tube Challenge

Every uniformed youth member of the Group will be given a smartie tube and are being challenged to fill it with 20 pence pieces and return it to the leadership team when it is filled. Whilst this may seem like a small amount if all the members of the Group take part we can raise nearly £1000 per month. We can only achieve this if everyone pulls together. This is an opportunity for the younger members of the Group to take a leading part in the fundraising efforts for their new hut. It is up to the young people themselves to work out how they raise the money be it by earning it, getting donations from family or friends or donating part of their pocket money. It is really up to them as to how inventive and industrious they are in raising the money. This will give them a stake in the hut which they will make good use of over the years to come.

I appreciate that this is will be represent a considerable amount of effort on their part. Having been involved in getting fundraising efforts underway in the last year or so I understand how much effort people are putting in to helping us achieve the goal of having a new hut within the next year. A massive thanks to all of you who are actively working towards this aim and help in the future.

Group Enjoy Christmas Pantomime

On 17th December 2009 the Group went to see this year's pantomime at the Kings Theatre. This year's offering was Aladdin Lisa Riley playing Widow Twankey and Michael Starke playing Wishee Washee. Nearly 70 Group members and friends attended and had a thoroughly good time with everyone getting into the spirit of the occasion and joining with the obligatory "he's behind you" shouts. A great way to finish off 2009. Many thanks to all those who joined in the fun. Hopefully we'll have an even bigger group next year.

Another Bag Packing Success

On Saturday 5th December the Group, in conjunction with the Cathedral Guide Company, raised the marvellous sum of £1472. There was also very good support from the leadership team and a couple of parents helping out too. Thank you all for a splendid effort.

Curry - Oke Family Night

As part of our ongoing fundraising activities to replace our Scout Hut, we held our Karaoke and Curry (hence the name!) Family Night on Saturday 21st November 2009.

Several willing Scout and parent volunteers got the hall ready in the afternoon; Callum provided a delicious vegetarian curry, Judy from the Guides supplied us with a lovely chicken curry and Mike cooked up the beef curry. Andy Elder did a fantastic job getting all the tables and chairs set out, with Heather helping to cook off the poppadoms and Guy cracked on with the washing up.

Soon after 6.30 p.m. our 100 guests started to arrive ready for an evening of fun, which began with our Group Chairman Steve Bradbury, ably assisted by Jo Holbrook and Judy, serving up the curry and rice to the waiting hordes. A steady flow of singing talent braved the microphone of Chris Daw Karaoke for the next hour, whilst 3 of the Patrol Leaders succeeded in selling £190 of raffle tickets for the chance to win some superb raffle prizes, some of which had been collected by the Patrol Leaders from Albert Road shops.

After some more enthusiastic singing, it was time for the Grand Auction, run with spectacular energy by Olly Bower, wringing every last pound from the crowd for each of the auction lots. We also had our November draw of our 100 Club and the names of this month’s winners may be found elsewhere on the website, along with details of how to join the 100 Club. The singing then continued unabated for another hour, with a magnificent total of £661:76 being raised overall.

A selection of photos of the evening’s entertainment taken by our resident Scout Group photographer, Matthew McDonald-Woods can be seen at our Group Picture Gallery.

I would particularly like to thank all the shops and local businesses who kindly donated raffle and auction prizes, including:

Kings Theatre City Plumbing Nevaeh Hair  Bransbury Butchers Sweetbriar Plumbing Ltd
Garbos Hair Vue Cinema The Mod Scene Southsea Fruit & Veg. Shop

More importantly, thank you to everyone that helped me before and during the evening, particularly my wonderfully supportive wife and daughter and family for everything they did. I hope that you all enjoyed yourselves as much as I did and I look forward to seeing you all at our next fundraising event.

Mike Wright, Scout Leader.

Scouts Make Candles For Creative Challenge Badge

The Scouts recently made decorative candles for the Creative Challenge badge. They made the candles by melting some candle wax with some crayons. A piece of candle was stuck to the plate and the molten wax poured around it and then the plate is plunged into cold water creating some interesting shaped sculptures. See below for some of their efforts.

Group Win District Swimming Gala

Congratulations to the Cubs and Scouts for doing so well at the District Swimming gala on Saturday evening of 14th November. The Cub team did exceptionally well winning their competition with a number of them actually winning their races.

The Scouts were very unlucky not to win their event, coming a close second. Some of them won their races too.

As a result of this very creditable effort by all concerned the Group won the Group trophy.

I would  like to thank all those who took part for what was a very good team effort. I'd also like to thank the parents who were there to support the team. It was greatly appreciated.

Chris Bowen
Group Scout Leader

Group Attend City Remembrance Parade

7 Scouts and 9 Cubs attended the Portsmouth City Annual Service of Remembrance in the Guildhall Square on Sunday 8th November. Despite it being a cold morning with the rain threatening the fall the Cubs and Scouts were smartly dressed in uniform.  We were the largest Scout Group represented at the Parade. As usual the Cubs and Scouts had refreshments in the Guildhall afterwards. Many thanks to all those attended. The leaders were very proud of the way the Cubs and Scouts presented such a positive image of Scouting to the people of Portsmouth.

We were also supported by the Pirate Explorer Unit who had 8 members on parade.

In keeping with tradition the Scouts made pancakes on the Thursday nearest Shrove Tuesday. Pancakes came out in interesting shapes sizes and thickness but were generally edible….. well none of the Scouts succumbed to food poisoning during the evening!!!

The Scouts took part in an evening developing their night navigation skills at Fort Purbrook. With the clear evening it was possible to identify key landmarks and roads in the City. In addition they learnt a variety of techniques that are helpful when navigating at night and in adverse weather conditions. At the end of the evening one of the Scouts was invested into the Troop in front of the fort with the City in the foreground

Fake wounds evening
As part of a programme to develop first aid skills the Pirate Explorer Scout Unit ran an evening where they worked with the Scouts to develop some ‘interesting’ wounds and then undertake some first aid with the Scouts.
